With a boombox blasting everything from Aretha Franklin to Phil Collins by her side, local artist Jessie Bell Barnes is slowly turning an unassuming alley into a bright canvas.
Barnes, who manages Artisan Alley, has been commissioned by the owners of the Mineral Resource Center building at 225 S. David to beautify the alley-facing wall. The building, which faces the David Street Station splash pad, is undergoing a complete gut rehab.
The painting of a pioneer woman isn’t based on one person, said Barnes, but she wants her to feel familiar. “I want her to be everybody,” said Barnes, who wants to depict a strong, “feminine Wyoming impression.”
Barnes is working on the painting on her days off work and so far has put some 20-hours into it. She hopes to get done before the weather turns.
