The deceased has been identified as 63-year-old South Dakota resident Dennis Smith.

According to the summary, a Chevy pickup was southbound on US 85 near milepost 157, while a Volvo truck tractor with a trailer was northbound.

The Volvo is believed to have crossed the center line and entered the southbound lane. The driver of the Chevy reacted to the Volvo entering his lane by applying the brakes.

Due to the icy road surface condition, the tires of the Chevy lost traction, and the Chevy began a driver side leading sideways slide. The driver’s side of the Chevy struck the front end of the Volvo. The Chevy then came to an uncontrolled rest on the southbound side of the road approximately 100 feet off the road.

The Volvo spun approximately 180 degrees and came to rest with the tractor facing southbound in the southbound lane of travel with the trailer off the roadway.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing, and is being conducted by the Wyoming Highway Patrol.
